Bilingual Authorization Overview
Are you a teacher interested in using your bilingual language abilities to teach dual-language students? If you鈥檙e proficient in Spanish or Mandarin and you want to teach in a dual language immersion environment or bilingual classroom, this program provides you with the authorization needed to provide instruction to English learners.
The bilingual authorization program is open to California credentialed teachers who hold a valid single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential at the time of application. The dual bilingual education allows you to teach students whose primary language is Spanish or Mandarin. As an aspiring bilingual teacher, the program prepares you to instruct learners in diverse settings, while also educating you about the culture and heritage associated with the secondary language.

Concentrated Format
The dual immersion program is offered in three, eight-week terms, providing nine units of credit, focused on preparing you to enter the dual-lingual classroom with confidence.

The Bilingual Authorization program at 同城约炮 has as its mission to assure that California teachers are prepared to serve the needs of English learners in the K-12 context. The program provides teacher candidates with the history of bilingual education in the U.S. and in California, while also providing the theoretical underpinnings of and educational practices related to bilingual education.
Bilingual teachers also serve as resources to educate their students to be productive members of a global society. The coursework emphasizes family and community, engagement, cultural understanding, and inclusive education.
Candidates in the bilingual authorization program will take BLA 64000 Dimensions of Bilingual Education, BLA 64100 Theory and Method of Bilingual Pedagogy, and BLA 64200 Culture of Emphasis.
The curriculum integrates the legislative foundations of bilingual education and the historical context of Spanish and English language policy in schools across the United States. Through this lens, program candidates develop a comprehensive understanding of the requirements for the bilingual authorization and the program requirements necessary to serve linguistically diverse students with confidence and cultural competence.

Program Prerequisites
If you鈥檙e a post-credential applicant, you must hold a valid single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential at the time of application for the dual learning program.
If you鈥檙e in the process of earning your credential, you must be concurrently enrolled in an 同城约炮 single subject, multiple subject, or education specialist credential program at the time of application for the two-way dual immersion program. In addition to the coursework of the two-way immersion program, a clinical practice component will be required.
Bilingual Authorization Admissions Requirements
- Post-credential applicants must hold a valid Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist credential at the time of applying for enrollment in the Bilingual Authorization program.
- Post-Credential Applicants: In order to be admitted to the program and obtain their Bilingual Authorization, post-credential candidates must verify one (1) of the following at the point of admission:
- Spanish Program:
- Be fluent in Spanish and pass the III (Subtest #147) or
- Demonstrate Spanish proficiency at the ACTFL Intermediate High level, which will be determined via a Spanish language assessment.

- Mandarin Program:
- Be fluent in Mandarin and pass the III (Subtest #165) or
- Demonstrate Mandarin proficiency at the ACTFL Intermediate High level, which will be determined via a Mandarin language assessment.

- Applicants must verify one (1) of the following at the point of admission:
- Valid Language Development Specialist (LDS) Certificate, CLAD Certificate, teaching credential with English Learner Authorization or CLAD Emphasis, or
- Eligibility for a CLAD Certificate or teaching credential with an English learner authorization
To earn a bilingual authorization, applicants seeking a bilingual authorization or bilingual added authorization must demonstrate language proficiency and pass a language assessment or show passage of the CSET subtest. Applicants must hold either a valid language development specialist (LDS) certificate, CLAD certificate, teaching credential with English learner authorization or CLAD emphasis, or eligibility for a CLAD certificate or teaching credential with an English learner authorization.
